Expert traveller hacks

Below are some tricks and tips you can use to save money on your adventures while still having the trip of your dreams. Everyone travels differently and has their own hacks but here are some bought together by the team of adventure travel experts at AWE365.

Pack common over-the-counter medications

Travelling can be tough on your body, so it’s always a good idea to bring along some over-the-counter medications. This way, you can be prepared for anything from a headache to an upset stomach.

These medications are easy to find and relatively inexpensive at home. So there is no reason not to have them on hand. However, they are often expensive and can be hard to find when you are in desperate need while in the jungles of the Congo or high in the Himalayas.

Learn basic foreign phrases

Learning some basic phrases in the local language will make your trip more enjoyable no matter where you travel. Please, thank you, hello and goodbye don’t take much effort but will engratiate you with the local’s making it one of the top expert traveller hacks.

People nearly always appreciate your effort to speak their language. Plus, if you enage in conversation no matter how stunted and difficult it may be you are more likely to meet new people and connect with locals. Duolingo is a great app to learn more than the basics.

Remember travel adapters

If you’re reading this you probably love to travel. And if you frequently travel, you will have at some point forgotten to bring a travel adapter. You can normally buy one when you arrive in a destination, but it is always frustrating when you already have half a dozen in a drawer at home.

Bring a reusable bottle

Not being able to take liquids into an airport is frustrating, but you can take a bottle. Then you can fill it up in the airport at water fountains, restauants or the taps etc. This saves on single use plastic and the frustrating cost of buying something that is normally free.

Check your passport

Renewing your passports is time consuming, expensive and can be a pain. But not realising your passport has expired, or does not have long enough left to visit a destination, can be a travel disaster.

So check your passport well in advance of travel to give you plenty of time to get it renewed. If you are cutting it fine then use a fast renewal service to quickly and securely get your passport replaced without delay.

Book visas in advance

As with your passport visas are something you should not leave to the last minute. Check if you need a visa and book it ahead of arrival. This will save time getting through passport control when you arrive in a country. Also visas generally cost less when booked in advance.

Avoid jet lag

There are two ways to avoid jetlag.

The first is being sensible. Adjust your sleep before you leave, by going to bed and waking up earlier or later than usual. Then once you’re on the plane, try to sleep as much as possible. Drink lots of water and avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate you and make it harder to sleep.

The second is the opposite. Fight the jet lag rather than accommodating it. So don’t change anything, but when you arrive stay awake until a reasonable bed time then sleep like normal. A good way to do this is to have a mad night out as alcohol will disrupt your sleep pattern so you can adjust to the new time zone.

But a note of warning jet lag and a hangover is a terrible combination! So the second option is a risky strategy!

Find cheap flights

Traveling is expensive, but there are always ways to save money. One is to find cheap flights through Skyscanner. It compares prices between different airlines, nearby airports and flight times/dates.

Particularly useful are the whole month search for those who are flexible on departure dates. But also set up fare alerts to let you know when there are deals on particular routes.

Book early

There are always plenty of good deals with airlines and tour operators if you book in advance. Often you can pay in instalments to help spread the costs. So one of the best adventure travel tips is to book early.

Book late

Last minute deals still exist. There are less around at the moment due to covid as many companies have less inventory available. However, if you are willing to wait until just before you wish to depart and are flexible with destinations then deals can still be found.
