A new sleeping bag shouldn’t be that exciting, but I’d had my old one since the previous millennium, so it was moving moment for me. Plus this is not just a review of Snugpak Travelpak 3 sleeping bag, but of a sleeping bag with mosquito net built in.
Snugpak are a British company that that design and manufacture all of their products in the UK. They make a range of outdoor gear including sleeping bags, tents, clothing and backpacks.
Their customers are outdoor enthusiasts. They appeal to people who want practical gear that does a job. They seem to put a lot of thought into what people need, then use the best materials for the job, and add little innovations that can make a big difference.
Review of Snugpak Travelpak 3 sleeping bag
I tend to only camp in the UK during summer, with the odd late spring or early autumn trip. So the two season Travelpak 3 is perfect – not too hot in the summer, but warm enough if it gets chilly. Combined with a sleeping bag liner, I recently found it kept me warm on a particularly cold October night.
I found the Snugpak Travelpak 3 sleeping bag to be very comfortable. Despite being a tapered mummy shape it has enough room in the foot area for my size ten feet. It is also fairly wide across the shoulders with a nice large hood to avoid any sleeping bag claustrophobia.
The zip is two way, so if like me your feet get overly warm you can undo one end to let some heat out, and inflict your feet on fellow campers. One thing I liked when conducting this review of Snugpak Travelpak 3, was the zip didn’t catch the material as can happen when opening and closing some sleeping bags.
My previous sleeping bag was great for travelling and lasted so long because it never got smelly, and was easy to wash. So for this review of Snugpak Travelpak 3 sleeping bag I was pleased to find it is made from Paratex antibacterial fabrics, these discourage the growth of bacteria and reduce odours.
The Snugpak Travelpak 3 is also easy to clean and can be chucked in a standard 30 degree wash – it doesn’t even take up the whole wash load. It is surprisingly quick drying and has a loop to hang it from which would be useful for drying if it gets wet while camping.
I bought my previous sleeping for an around the world trip back in 1999, so it was very important that is is easy to pack and took up little space. Although these days I normally camp with a car, size still matters to me as everything needs packing.
The good news is the Snugpak Travelpak 3 sleeping bag with mosquito net is easy to squeeze into its compression stuff sack. In which it squeezes down to a 26cm long tube shape with a 22cm diameter. It also weighs just 1.5kg.
Sleeping bag with mosquito net
As I said at the start a sleeping bag is perhaps not the most exciting. However a review of Snugpak Travelpak 3 sleeping bag would be complete without talking about the extra features Snugpak have added.
The first is that it’s a sleeping bag with mosquito net built in. There is a small pocket in the hood which hides a net that can be zipped around the inside of the hood. Although I didn’t need to use it I had a go and found it easy to use and comfortable even with the net laid against my face.
The Snugpak Travelpak 3 sleeping bag also has a very useful is the integrated pocket – I know it is not groundbreaking, but it makes a difference. It’s ideal for holding a small torch or a phone so you don’t lose it in your tent. In dormitory accommodation with strangers you could even put valuables in there.
Review of Snugpak Travelpak 3: Conclusion
The Snugpak Travelpak 3 sleeping bag is very comfortable and has plenty of room for a mummy shape. It is cool in the summer and according to the spec is comfortable in temperatures down to minus three degrees – although I would probably use a sleeping bag liner in those conditions.
It is small, lightweight and easy to look after. It also has useful features such as two way zip that doesn’t tangle and a pocket. Plus of course it is a sleeping bag with a mosquito net built in which is very handy.
To conclude this review of Snugpak Travelpak 3 sleeping bag I’d say it would be perfect for backpacking and round the world trips. But it is also ideal for camping in the UK from spring through to autumn, and as an emergency sleep solution in case friends stay over.
