Fancy a kitesurfing vacation in paradise that works for the entire family? Want to sip cocktails while your partner kitesurfs and the kids are well entertained? Then check out this review of C Mauritius luxury family kitesurfing holiday in Palmar.
On a recent holiday to the beautiful island of Mauritius, we made the decision to spend our time at the relatively new hotel of C Mauritius. This gorgeous property is located on the east coast of the island in Palmar – a destination well known for its warm weather and consistent wind!
Let me tell you a little bit about the hotel and the reason we decided to spend some time there. Well, it goes without saying that I am quite keen on kitesurfing and this hotel is perfectly positioned for just that.
What makes it even better is the fact that the East Kite School, run by the talented and enthusiastic Martin, is situated on-site. So you can rent equipment, take a lesson, or even just feel a bit safer knowing there is a dedicated rescue boat if you get in trouble.
The East Kite school is a well-run and equipped school with all the best Airush equipment. They have kites and boards of all sizes to suit any rider.
This is a really great spot if you’re just starting out or want to improve your skills on the butter flat water of Mauritius. It is also suitable to get the kids into the sport.
The one thing that really impressed me was the complimentary introduction to kitesurfing experience offered to all C Mauritius guests. This is a short lesson given by one or two of East Kite school’s IKO trained instructors. It allows you, your partner or kids find out if kitesurfing is for them without having to splash out on lessons.
The school also offers beginner, intermediate, and advanced kitesurfing courses as well. If, like me, life has got in the way of getting out on the water, what with Covid and all, then you can blow those cobwebs away with a refresher lesson to get your confidence back.
And if you already know what you’re doing you’re welcome to bring your own kit. The friendly staff are all always on hand to help launch your kite. They’ll also lend you a pump, provide boat-based rescue or give you a pair of boots to protect your feet from the reef and sea urchins.
The East Coast of Mauritius, and the area around Belle Mare and Palmar – where C Mauritius is situated – is known as one of the windiest parts of Mauritius. The wind is reliable and consistent during the island’s winter months of June to September.
But don’t let the word ‘winter’ fool you! You’ll still be treated to sunshine-filled days, beautiful blue skies, and warm weather. Day time temperatures hover around a lovely 25 degrees Celsius!
The wind here blows cross on-shore across the lagoon which is sheltered by a reef about a kilometre out. The lagoon is butter flat and very shallow with small waves further out where the reef breaks. This means its great for beginners and safe, just be careful when kiting in low tide as you could end up standing on the coral.
You can comfortably kite at both high and low tide. Just have your wits about you as even with booties on, I managed to get an urchin through my foot when taking a tumble. There are also several shallow rocks along the shoreline and fishing boats tied up near the beach.
The wind tends to be a bit gustier right on the shoreline due to the presence of pine trees, so you’ll want to head out a little way if you’re just beginning. Most schools, including the East Kite School will help you with boat support and run lessons from them.
If you’re already an experienced kiter, this coast of Mauritius also offers some incredible downwind opportunities. You can glide over the water past beautiful bays, fishing villages, brightly-coloured temples, and stunning island backdrops.
Now, a review of C Mauritius luxury family kitesurfing holiday in Palmar needs a little about the hotel itself. C Mauritius is an all-inclusive hotel, which means that all your food and drinks are included. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are offered in the hotel’s main dining room with an international buffet that changes daily.
One of the highlights for us was the barbeque experience with live cooking stations set out by the pool. If you book in for a week you’ll also get to dine at the resort’s fine dining establishment, Wok ‘n Roll, once during your stay. Here we were treated to a scrumptious three course dinner of the most delicious Asian cuisine.
There are also two bars for those much-needed after kiting cocktails (they make their own rum). Plus you’ll find a deli and bar pretty much on the beach. So between sessions you can quickly grab a bite to eat and refreshment before hitting the water again. And like I said, this is all included in your stay.
But the best part of C Mauritius is that the kitesurfing happens right on the beach in front of the hotel. So my partner could spend the day in the sun with unlimited prosecco and cocktails, kids could play happily in the sand, sea or lovely pool, all while I went kitesurfing.
The beach is not private, but a wide swathe of sand that stretches as far as the eye can see in both directions. This is great as it means there is also opportunity for other activities. Long beach walks, horse-riding on the sand, fishing, and there is good snorkelling right in front of the hotel.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a better destination for a Mauritius luxury family kitesurfing holiday as there is so much to do. There is a spa on-site, a gym, yoga sessions, beach activities for the older kids and beach toys available for younger ones.
They also offer a range of extra activities. There are guided walking tours of the local town and trekking into the interior of the island. On the water there are romantic boat trips, plus free Pedalos, kayaks, and stand up paddleboards are available to use from the boat house.
One thing that sets this C Mauritius apart from other resorts are their Cignature experiences. These are designed to make for unforgettable holiday moments.
Think sessions by the C – party evenings with local musicians and DJs. A Clubhouse with boats, boardgames and weekly itinerary of organised activities designed to unleash your inner child.
Their Cpicerie afternoons where colourful doughnuts, yummy pancakes and ice cream with all the toppings satisfy those with a sweet tooth. And so the list goes on!
