Going on a campervan ski trip or caravan snowboarding holiday in France sounds like the premise of a bad sitcom. But it’s possible and surprisingly accessible. Many ski resorts are quite eclectic in the facilities that they offer, and that includes hookups for motorhomes and caravans.
As Caravan Times magazine pointed out, caravanning is a lower-cost transport and accommodation option for skiers and snowboarders in these harsh economic times. It gives you your own space and allows you to be master of your own trip.
Of course, the key to getting this unorthodox combination right is preparation. Breaking down is never a nice experience. And doing it while towing a caravan in the snow is not an ideal way to start your skiing holiday!
You’ll want to make sure that you get adequate campervan/caravan insurance. Plus get fresh service on your vehicle and of course don’t forget snow chains.
There are plenty of camp sites that make a caravan snowboarding holiday in France doable. Here are a couple of our favourites:
The glorious Les 2 Alpes in the Veneon Valley is a great option. Reaching 3,600 metres in altitude it is a cracking all round resort, check out this review of Les 2 Alpes snowboarding holiday to find out more.
It is perfect for a campervan ski trip or caravan snowboarding holiday. It is a little further south – meaning more sunshine and a little warmer. Plus it’s served by an excellent caravanegie (alpine caravan and camping site) called the Champ du Moulin.
Spend the day ripping up the half-pipe, kickers and rails and ample off-piste in the resort itself. You can then look forward to 6 or 10 amp electrical hook-ups, as much hot water as you want and fully-heated games and TV rooms. With 60 pitches to play with, there’s seldom no room at the inn.
Love to freeride? Then head to Chamonix, one of the best off-piste ski resorts in the world. This bustling axis of European winter sports is the place to go if you like it steep and challenging. There’s a ludicrous amount of freeride options among the vast backcountry. Plus you can show off you freestyle moves in the two diverse terrain parks.
And just a few minutes away from here is one of the top sites for a caravan snowboarding holiday in France.
Camping Les 2 Glaciers is an amiable, family-run outfit whose views across the iced arc of the mountains are incredible. Just as impressive is the bar which is something of a meeting place for skiers, climbers and snowboarders alike. The perfect place to recharge the batteries at the end of a day on the slopes.
You’ll also find a, restaurant (serving winter-warming French classics), table tennis tables, wi-fi and a kids playground. There are tip-top amenities for the disabled making it the most accessible mobile home camp site in a ski resort that we are aware of.
If you are not travelling with your own campervan or caravan, or not all members of your party can fit into yours, then there are options. Most winter camp sites offer a range of alternative accommodation.
Some have motorhomes set up to rent, others have chalets or little apartments. Plus you’ll often find heated static homes with kitchenettes, living areas and separate bedrooms for a home-from-home feeling.
Mobile home and caravan spaces at winter campsites near ski resorts are often rammed with seasonaires keeping their costs down. This means spots can be limited, so don’t just turn up looking to camp. Be sure you book your spot in advance to avoid disappointment on your skiing holiday.
A ski vacation by campervan or caravan is certainly doable. It offers a cheap, exciting, authentic and convenient option. It is particularly good for those planning to stay for longer than a typical one week holiday. Or for people who plan to visit a few resorts under their own steam.
We hope that a campervan ski trip or caravan snowboarding holiday in France now doesn’t sound quite so far fetched!
