Itinerary for the Slovenia Swimming Holiday: Swim in Wild Glacial Lakes and Rivers
Day 1: Upon arrival in Slovenia we will pick you up from the airport and travel to our first destination, the sunny town of Velenje. We will establish the needs and wants of your group to ensure you get the most out of your time with us.
Day 2: We set out today for our first swim in the Šaleška Lakes which were formed as a result of previous coal mining that took place in Velenje. This includes the town’s namesake, Lake Velenje, which is the largest and most popular lake in the area. After a lakeside lunch, we will continue swimming in each of the lakes before retiring to our accommodation for dinner.
Day 3: Today we will be making our way to the mountain town of Bovec, home to the largest protected area and only national park in Slovenia, Triglav National Park, and the iconic River Šoca. First, however, we will make a pit stop in Italy, as we will be very close to the border, to swim in Lake Pedril which is found in an ancient glacial valley. After a hearty lakeside lunch to take in all the beautiful nature, we will head to our accommodation to rest before going out to explore Bovec.
Day 4: After waking up in the heart of the mountains, we will make our way to the famous alpine River Šoca. This emerald-green river is one of Slovenia’s hidden gems, and one of the most stunning rivers in all of Europe. On a hot summer's day, a swim in this river is amazingly refreshing. There are also beautiful landscapes and waterfalls to enjoy. After a beachside lunch, we will take a small hike to the Tolmin gorge, taking in the unspoilt nature and everything else it has to offer.
Day 5: We are on the move again today to our final destination of the trip. Heading over towards the town of Bled, home of Lake Bled, which is one of the most visited natural attractions in Slovenia. After settling in, we will take a short drive to the west end of Lake Bled, the Zaka Valley. Here, we will swim in the beautiful blue waters towards the tiny tear-shaped island that is home to a historical church known as the Church of the Assumption, taking in the atmosphere of Lake Bled as we go.
Day 6: Today, we take the short drive to the glacially formed Lake Bohinj to enjoy one of the most picturesque swims you will ever take. It is the largest natural permanent lake in Slovenia, and some say its beauty rivals that of Lake Bled. After our swim, we will have lunch, you will have a chance to then have another swim or explore the area on foot.
Day 7: On our last full day, we give the group the option to return to Lake Bled and see the top sightseeing spots in the area, or go for a swim in the location of your choosing. In the evening, we will take you to one of our favourite restaurants in the area to talk about the past week's activities.
Day 8: Time to say our goodbyes and head to the airport. If you are travelling together and have a late flight, there is an option to spend the day in the capital city Ljubljana before making your way to the airport.
If you wish to spend additional days in Slovenia these will need to be arranged independently.
Equipment:
As we are going to be doing a lot of swimming, make sure you pack plenty of swim kits. You will also need clothing appropriate for hiking, such as a pair of sturdy walking shoes.
