NAMASTE
Recent global events have turned our lives, and livelihoods, upside down the last few years. Priorities have shifted and continue to shift as new dramatic global events continue to occur. This unstable and unpredictable time in our lives has motivated Local Surf Maroc to offer a Rebalancing Surf & Yoga Retreat in Morocco.
In our regular Yoga & Surf Experiences, we mention that surfing and yoga are ideal companions when embarking on a journey to improve your life physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. For this week-long retreat, we allow space to delve deeper into the Yoga by focusing on the teachings of Hatha, creating a perfect environment for harmony, health, and happiness.
Synonymous with harmony is balance, and to us, balance is a total state of health that incorporates a tranquillity of body and mind. To be balanced is a way of being, and a state of mind.
The surfing lessons provided this week will remain at the same standard as our other Beginner or Intermediate Surf Experiences, with lesson being equally informative and progressive. The surf lessons will be taught on the beach, to find balance and acceptance to adapt to the ever changing conditions of the water, further supporting the aim of the our Moroccan Rebalancing Surf & Yoga Retreat of finding inner peace.
Whether it’s Yoga classes or Surf lessons, our aim is that you get our full attention and the most from your experience with us. This is why there are limited spaces available for this retreat and both the yoga and surf sessions will be closed to other participants that have not signed up to Local Surf Maroc’s retreat in Tamraght, Taghazout Bay, Morocco.
IS THIS RETREAT FOR ME?
This Rebalancing Hatha Yoga and Surf Retreat is open to all 18 years of age and above.
While some understanding of and previous Yoga practice is beneficial, it is not required.
No previous surfing experience is required! Surf lessons will start from the fundamentals if you are a complete novice. If you have some experience surfing, there is also space for you on this retreat as groups can be split accordingly to ability.
While you don’t have to be a fitness fanatic or in tip top shape, the Rebalancing Hatha Surf & Yoga Retreat can be physically challenging for some. Being free of injury and illness will allow you to get the most out of this Retreat.
Alternatively, if you’re starting your journey, regardless if it’s fitness, surfing, or yoga, we suggest our standard Surf & Yoga Experience to provide a broader yoga experience and slower pace of progression.
Itinerary for the 7-night Morocco multi-activity holiday: Hatha yoga & surf retreat.
WHY HATHA YOGA?
Hatha Yoga is an old branch of yoga, with references dating back to Buddist texts of the 11th Century and various breathing techniques that are still used today. Classical Hatha Yoga developed in the 15th Century, resembling what is practiced today that included acts of self-purification, asanas (postures), pranayama and kumbhaka (breathing techniques), mudras (internalized energy practices), meditation, chakras (centers of energy), kundalini, and nadanusandhana (concentration on inner sound).
Modern Hatha Yoga has been developing over the last 100 years, being introduced to Europe and North America, when several prominent practitioners dropped the religious and spiritfual focus of Hatha to develop the idea of “Yoga as exercise”. But just as each wave of the ocean returns to itself, a curiosity and re-discovery of Hatha Yoga’s spiritual beginings have led many to embrace what Hatha Yoga stands for.
On this Rebalancing Surf & Yoga Retreat in Morocco, just as in India, Hatha Yoga is a broad movement. The retreat is open and available for all, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, or religious beliefs.
The word “Hatha” can be broken down into 2 parts
Ha - referring to the Sun and being associated with a masculine energy
Tha - referring to the Moon and being associated with a feminine energy
Both energies inhabit the same body, and the aim of the Hatha Yoga classes is to find this balance and achieve peace and serenity.
WHY SURFING?
Surfing has its origins in Polynesia, most famously in Hawaii, and was rumoured to be introduced to Morocco in the 1960’s by an American soldier stationed in Casablanca shortly after World War II had ended. The sport and lifestyle in Taghazout Bay was cultivated largely by French tourists and travellers as they started to holiday further and further south in Morocco. Surfing has been gaining popularity in Taghazout Bay since the 1960’s with local fishermen and surfers having refined a unique vibe in the area. The area attracts tourists and surfers internationally because of the sun, sand, and surf.
Just as yoga helps you connect you to yourself, surfing helps you connect with nature. Surfing can be described as an extension of yoga because it requires the same connection of breath, focus, and technique. In surfing there is equivalent importance to learning how to clear your mind, let go of expectations, and finding the balance in order to feel the most connected with yourself and your surroundings.
Regardless of your surfing experience and ability, at Local Surf Maroc, we will provide you with the same quality of surf lessons that you would expect from our Surf Coaching, Surf Mentoring, or Surf Guiding surf experiences.
