If you have experienced climbing in some form or other, whether that be on an indoor climbing wall or at your local crag, and are craving a real rock adventure in dramatic alpine scenery, then this trip is for you. You do need some rock climbing experience to be sure you will enjoy the trip but don’t need to be an expert and indoor wall climbing counts as experience!

The Southern French Alps is blessed with a unique geology resulting in some of the best rock climbing in the world including Ceüse, known for its challenging limestone routes, and Orpierre, where the whole village has evolved around rock climbing.

Other than the great variety of climbing, the other advantage is the weather with 300 days of sun a year! Which makes a trip to climb the Alps even better.

Rock climbing sites in France are all bolted so this is ‘sport climbing’ in a natural environment. This reduces the risk of poor gear placements and means you can concentrate on your actual climbing and enjoy the rock 110%!

We use local, fully qualified high mountain guides and rock climbing instructors for this trip to ensure your safety. For top roping days, the number of people for one guide is maximum 8 and for the multi pitch route, you will be 2 or 3 per guide depending on the route.

What to expect

Itinerary for France rock climbing weekend in Céüse & Orpierre. Your day to day plan to climb the Alps.

DAY 1: Arrival in Gap - make your own way to Gap and check into your hotel (we will help you plan your journey to Gap which is accessible by train and bus from major transport hubs)

DAY 2: Single pitch climbing in Dauphins and Corbières cliffs. Your guide will collect you from the hotel in the morning and take you up to the climbing site.
There are two sections offering a total of 102 routes from 3a to 8a so there really is something for everyone.

It is the perfect first day for everyone to find their climbing level and acclimatise. The guide will rig up a range of routes for you to try and then adapt these as the day progresses to take into account each individual's level.
You'll be able to discuss and test out different belaying devices and rope techniques, try leading (or not!!) and challenge your climbing level, all on beautiful rock in the warm sun with magnificent mountain views.

DAY 3: Climbing in Orpierre - single pitch with possibility of multi pitch routes
Orpierre is a charming village renowned throughout the world for its cliffs and sport climbing - it is the "village that climbs".

There are more than 600 well-equipped routes for all levels from 3c to 8c with slabs to impressive overhangs, everything a climber could ever want, so indulge yourself!

Your guide will choose routes based on yesterday's climbing. This is essentially a single pitch climbing day but there is the possibility for more advanced climbers to pay a supplement for an extra guide to do a big multi pitch climbing route if they wish.

Lunch can be either a picnic or a restaurant lunch in the village.

At the end of the day you can soak in the ambiance of Orpierre village with a drink in one of the bars before your guide takes you back to Gap for the evening.

DAY 4: Climbing in Céüse - multi pitch routes
You will be checking out of the hotel this morning so need to pack up your bags.

For your last day you will have the opportunity to do a big multi-pitch route with 2 climbers per guide on the cliffs of the world famous Céüse climbing site!

Whilst known for its tough routes, local guides have put up some easier itineraries over recent years to open up this high level climbing sector to amateurs and your guide will suggest appropriate routes for you.

There is a 45 minutes to an hour walk in to get to the foot of the cliff at 2000m and enter the world of elite sport climbing! You will spend the day here with a picnic and enjoy the rock and the views whilst challenging your climbing skills! A real climbing adventure finale!

At the end of the day, your guide will take you back to Gap for your journey home. If you would like to stay an extra night, please just ask when you book and we can add this on.
