Canoe Safari Holiday in New Zealand: Rangitikei River tour

Join us on our Rangitikei River tour for a wonderful canoe safari holiday in New Zealand.

The Rangitikei river carves its way through the steep deep papa gorges of the Western edge of the Kaimanawa and Ruahine ranges on its journey south to the Tasman Sea. The rapids are mostly grade two with a few short grade three sections and the scenery is utterly spectacular! If you are up for a little challenge and to learn some great canoe skills, this is the river for you.

There is clear water for trout fishing and swimming, grassy campsites on the river’s edge, high papa bluffs, stands of native bush, short walks to waterfalls and the amazing “Rangitikei Boulders”. We also walk to the remains of the Mangaweka power scheme – Built in 1911 Mangaweka was one of the first towns on the main trunk line to have its own power.

Our 4 day trips start at the end of the White Water rafting section at River Valley. Other trips start progressively further down the river, and each section has its own stunning scenery and fun-filled rapids. Our preferences are for two days and upwards.

What to expect

This is the general four day itinerary for our Canoe Safari Holiday in New Zealand which can change due to weather, water levels, or other factors at anytime, the three day tour starts at Day 2, and the two day tour starts at day 3

Day 1
Depart canoe Safaris base, Ohakune at 7.30am and drive to River Valley. Unload bus and trailer and load gear into canoes. Comprehensive safety talk and paddle instruction.Plenty of time to practice in the large pool at the start. If the river is high enough then we paddle the first rapid, but portage the next two due to rocks and the 'Chute" rapid. We take the first day slowly as there are plenty of rapids and you have plenty of time to develop paddling skills. Camp in the gorge.

Day 2
Paddle through the end of the gorge past Tarata and on down to Omatane campsite with a short waterfall walk on the way. We pass under the bungy jump site at Gravity Canyon. There's plenty of time in the afternoon for swimming and fishing.

Day 3
The rapids are spaced every 50m or so but there's nothing too hard in this section. We paddle down towards ToeToe road, and under the first of the railway viaducts. The Kawhatau river enter on the left. Before Mangaweka there is a short walk to the remains of the old Mangaweka Power Scheme - built in 1911. We paddle past Mangaweka and down to the campsite at Soldiers road.

Day 4
An easy paddle down to the Rangitikei Boulders. This is a short walk to a small reserve with lots of round boulders amongst the native trees - like Moeraki but without the beach! Lunch on the riverbank, then a short paddle down to the takeout at Ohingaiiti. Return to Ohakune around 3.30pm.
