What is Ski touring
Ski touring is typically done off-piste and outside of ski resorts, and may extend over a period of more than one day. Often it is called back country skiing and tours may take you to a mountain peak or even cross a mountain range
Fitness is an important part of touring. We ask that our guests who want to earn to skin in Tirol to be able to climb 1000m in four hours whilst carrying a backpack and wearing skis/snowboard. We anticipate doing at least one tour of 1000m.
You don’t need to be a skiing pro to try touring. Some routes demand good technique and experience of tricky terrain, but there’s plenty of easier tours around MoaAlm as well. If you can ski a red and black runs comfortably then you’ll be able to handle any of our beginner tours, especially after some off piste lessons on our free ride days.
Touring does require different equipment to downhill skiing. The skis are much lighter, allowing for easier uphill movement. the boots also have a ‘walking mode’ allowing your ankle to flex. Your skis will need a specific kind of binding that will lift at the heel for the skin up, but clip down for the ski down. Finally, you need a pair of skins to attach to the base of your skis so that they grip into the snow as you climb. You can hire all the gear from our local ski shop.
As soon as you leave the safety of the ski piste, avalanche gear and knowledge are paramount. Everyone touring should be carrying a transceiver, shovel and probe. But they also need to know how to use them. Day one of our beginner ski touring holiday in Austria we will instruct you on avalanche safety techniques and how to read the snow conditions. The course is led by a local and knowledgeable guide.
While you Learn to skin in Tirol at MoaAlm Mountain Retreat you will appreciate the five yoga classes in our in-house yoga studio with panoramic mountain views. At MoaAlm we believe that yoga is for everyone, no matter what your age or level of fitness and, as such, our classes are prepared with all of our guests in mind.
