ABOUT THE QUEYRAS:
Situated on the border of the French and Italian Alps, the Queyras is off the beaten track and has an excellent reputation for ski touring thanks to its excellent snow record and Southern Alps sun (300 days per year). There are a huge range of ski tours for all levels and abilities easily accessible from a number of mountain refuges.
It is wild and undiscovered with a strong culture and history influenced by its position. It is home to a UNESCO world heritage site, the forts of Vauban and has been classified as a Regional Nature Park. It is also home to the highest village in Europe, Saint Veran at 2040m, where you will spend the second night of your trip.
HOLIDAY DETAILS:
This 8 day guided Queyras ski touring holiday in the French Alps has a range of fixed departure dates you can join as an individual or couple through March and April. It is also possible to customise this trip for a private group of 6 or more people.
The trip is a multi day, refuge to refuge ski tour but with two nights in each refuge for optimal flexibility and at least two days ski touring with a light pack for you! You will start off with a skills day honing avalanche safety skills and off piste skiing before heading out into the remote Alpine wilderness.
Your guide for the trip is an experienced UIAGM high mountain guide and ski instructor local to the area. He has lots of local knowledge and will make your safety his top priority.
Ski touring kit is not included in this package as many people have their own kit. This is possible to hire for a supplement.
WHO WILL LOVE THIS TRIP?
Ski touring experience is an advantage for this trip but not essential. You need to be a competent piste skier with some off piste experience, ideally in different snow conditions and have a good overall fitness level.
This is a progressive week of ski touring in the spectacular Queyras Regional Nature Park. The 8 day guided Queyras ski touring holiday in the French Alps starts with an intensive off piste skiing and avalanche safety day - to refine your skills and technique and get your ski legs ready for the tour!!
You will then set off on a 5 day ski touring trip into the heart of the Regional Nature Park using two different high mountain refuges as your base. The area is perfect for ski touring, with lots of possibilities to extend or shorten tours making it easily adaptable for all levels and conditions.
Plan for 8 day guided Queyras ski touring holiday in the French Alps
DAY 1: Arrival
You need to get to Gap for the start of this trip. You'll meet the other guests on the trip at the hotel in the evening.
DAY 2: Off-Piste Skiing and High Mountain Safety
Your guide will collect you in the morning and take you to the Queyras mountains. If you have hired ski touring equipment you'll collect this en route.
You'll go to the charming little ski village of Saint Veran, which is also the highest village in Europe at 2040m of altitude and where you will be spending the night tonight!
Today is about re-finding your ski legs and practising off piste skiing using the lifts in different snow conditions. This is a good way for the guide to get a feel for everyone's level.
During the day you will also revise your high mountain safety knowledge and refresh essential avalanche search and rescue skills.
Lunch isn't included for today as there will be the option to eat in a restaurant at lunch in the resort (this is payable as extra).
DAY 3: Ski into Refuge de la Blanche
Ski tour over a mountain pass with a descent down to the Clausis Chapel with a final gradual ascent to the refuge.
DAY 4: Tour de la Tete des Toilles
A spectacular ski tour from the refuge around the unmistakable and magnificent Tete de Toilles, a dramatic pointy mountain.
DAY 5: Col de Chamoussère (2884m) and Refuge d'Agnel (2580m)
A ski tour over to the next refuge over the spectacular col and rocky ridge.
DAY 6: Tour du Pain de Sucre
Another fabulous ski tour with beautiful views of the Italien Mont Viso throughout.
DAY 7: Le Grand Queyras (3114m)
The grand finale to the majestic Grand Queyras before heading back to civilisation. your guide will drive you back to Gap this evening for a night back at your first hotel.
DAY 8: Return Home
