Itinerary for 6 day inn to inn Rocky Mountains road cycling tour in Canada
Day 1 (Sunday), Banff - Revelstoke.
After meeting at 9 am at the Banff train station, the group is shuttled to Lake Louise for a photo opportunity of the iconic lake, before setting out on the bikes for a short ride to Emerald Lake to get acclimatized. Later in the day, we shuttle through Glacier National Park and Mount Revelstoke National Park to our beautiful hotel in the heart of Revelstoke. Distance: 14km/9mi, +147m/482ft, -150m/492ft.
Day 2, Along Arrow Lake to Halcyon Hot Springs.
After a delicious breakfast, it's an early departure for the ride south down the spectacular Columbia River valley. Enjoy a sumptuous lunch at Shelter Bay before crossing Upper Arrow Lake by ferry. Our destination is the Halcyon (natural) Hot Springs and their luxurious cabins are the perfect location for finishing a wonderful day of cycling: in the lakeside pools, you are treated to an unforgettable soak under the stars. Distance: 72km/45mi, +823m/2700ft, -801m/2628ft.
Day 3, Enjoy Summit Lake and Nakusp.
Today you have multiple distances options. We will be starting our day by riding along Upper Arrow Lake to the small mountain town of Nakusp. After a refreshment stop in this old mining town, we will head up to the mountain pass surrounding our lunch stop, Summit Lake. Bring your swimwear, Summit Lake is a beautiful warm lake where you can enjoy a dip after the gentle 17km climb from Nakusp. After lunch, we will head back down towards Nakusp and Halcyon Hot Springs. Tonight, we will be dining together at the Kingfisher Restaurant. Enjoy a recovery soak in the hot pools it will do wonders for your tired legs.
Distance: Upwards of 105km/65mi, +1,323 m /4341ft, -1,318 m/4324ft.
Day 4, New Denver - Fish Lake - Kaslo.
This morning we will have a 45min transfer to yesterday's lunch stop, Summit Lake where we will be beginning the ride. The morning will be spent riding the gentle road into the Slocan Valley to the village of New Denver located on the shore of Slocan Lake. Once in New Denver, we will boost our caffeine levels with a coffee and pastry at one of the local coffee shops on the main street. We will then head up the 16km climb to our lunch stop for the day, Fish Lake. After lunch, you will be treated with the most gentle and longest descent of the whole trip. The 30km stretch of road between Fish Lake and Kaslo is built on an old railway bed that use to connect the mine around Retallack and the town of Kaslo. The gradient averages around -2% for the entire afternoon! This is Etienne's favorite road in all the Kootenays, you are in for a treat! Tonight, enjoy dinner in a restaurant of your choice in the lovely town of Kaslo. Distance: 78 km/48mi, +947m/3107ft, -1,172m/3845ft.
Day 5, From Kalso along Kootenay Lake to Crawford Bay.
Today we are back on the bike along yet another stunning body of water, Kootenay Lake. We will be riding along the west shore of the lake all the way to the Balfour Ferry terminal where we are going to enjoy lunch before we board the vessel. A short scenic ferry crossing takes us to the east shore of Kootenay Lake, where we will have two short climbs before a thrilling descent into the artisan town of Crawford Bay. This unique Kootenay village features a handweaver, artisan blacksmith, glassblower, woodcarver, and broom maker. From here you will have the options, to either ride, the final 30km to our accommodation or enjoy Crawford Bay and catch a van ride to the lodge. Tonight, we will be enjoying our final group dinner with stunning views over West Arm Provincial Park. Distance: Options 1 Kaslo – Crawford Bay: 51km/32mi, + 927m/3059ft, - 930m/3063ft. Option 2: Kaslo – Destiny Bay resort: 80km¬/50miles, +1328m/4357ft, -1308m/4291ft.
Day 6 (Friday), Creston and return to Banff.
Our morning ride takes us along the shores of Kootenay Lake, dotted with many little resorts and secluded coves. Cyclists will enjoy the light traffic and spectacular mountain and lake views. This last day's ride takes us in the direction of Creston before returning to Banff by van at approximately 6:00 P.M. Distance: 25km/16mi, +300m/984ft, -261m/856ft.
