Guide to Switzerland snowkiting holidays

Switzerland has some of Europe’s most impressive mountains, top ski resorts and some of the best snowkiting on the continent. The high mountain passes and wide, flat meadows are perfect terrain for Switzerland snowkiting holidays. The sport is well-established – in comparison to other areas of Europe – making it easier to find snowkiting schools and other kiters to ride with.

Take a Switzerland snowkiting holiday, and you’ll almost certainly end up at the Simplon Pass, near the town of Brig. This area has long been a favourite of snowkiters, and has good facilities, great snow and plenty of wind. Which is why the Swiss Snowking School is based here offering lessons, trips and gear hire.

Simplon Pass boasts a wide range of options for snowkiters. Beginners will love the wide, flat areas that are perfect for practising. The more advanced can enjoy testing their skills more difficult terrain, enjoying deep powder and negotiating hills and gullies, plus of course starting to get air and learning tricks.

There are several other good snowkiting areas near Simplon. If on a Switzerland snowkiting holiday you should stay in the area for a few days and try out all of them.

Grimsel Pass is a good area to explore and the Swiss Snowkiting School runs trips here. This is a very remote, beautiful area, with plenty of space for kiters and incredible views. The journey up to the pass is by snow cat and at the end of the day, you’ll enjoy a glorious 40 minute ride back down into the valley.

Another great spot is at the ski resort and spa town of Leukerbad. It ticks all the boxes with some nice, big flat areas, some good slopes and a frozen lake.

Lake Silvaplana near St Moritz in the Engadine Valley is where kitesurfing began. When it freezes over in the winter snowkiting becomes popular. The nearby Bernina Massif is also popular if you prefer more varied terrain.

Switzerland snowkiting holidays offers some of the most accessible, yet still remote, snowkiting in the Alps. With plenty of wide open spaces to enjoy and some stunning views and a great atmosphere, it’s definitely one of the top picks of the European snowkite scene.
