Lying north of Bulgaria and west of the Ukraine, on the shores of the Black Sea, Romania is very often overlooked. But this once-mysterious country has plenty to do and see. You’ll find stunning views, friendly vibes and a taste of traditional culture. And if you want to take a Romania windsurfing trip, just explore its coast and its mountain lakes.
Romania’s Black Sea coast offers some superb sandy beaches, good times and some good windsurfing. The Black Sea does not offer much in the way of waves, but when the wind is up, there is some good flat-water sailing to be had. It’s a great place for beginners to learn, as well as for the more experienced to test themselves. The best time for coastal sailing in Romania is generally October to April, when winds are strongest.
Navodari is a favourite on the Romanian windsurfing scene. It has reliable winds and good spots for everyone from beginners to expert riders. While it is mostly flat, you will find some small waves in Navodari. Mamaia, Romania’s busiest beach resort, is another good choice. The water is shallow near the shore, making things easy for beginners. Vama Veche is another popular spot, though it’s known more for its nightlife than its windsurfing. It has good wind speeds and some small waves.
If you want to get off the beach, you’ll be able to windsurf on many of Romania’s lakes. Lake Ghioroc is a man-made lake, created by mining, that has been turned into a watersports haven. The lake is 97 km long, and gets pretty windy when conditions are right. For really idyllic lake windsurfing, head up into the Carpathian Mountains. You might need your own gear, and you’ll definitely need a spirit of adventure.
Take a Romania windsurfing holiday and see a side to this stunning country that you never knew existed.
