Kitzbuhel is one of Austria’s most popular ski resorts. It is an attractive medieval town, high in the Tyrol, with a big reputation for quality skiing and upmarket nightlife. Snowboarders and skiers flock to the town every winter. They are joined by ever-increasing numbers of adventurous travellers taking a Kitzbuhel snowkiting trip.
It is difficult to find a snowkiting spot in Kitzbuhel itself, with its busy runs and lifts. But there are several good spots near the resort, making it easy to combine snowkiting with skiing or snowboarding.
Reschensee is perhaps the best spot in the Tyrol for snowkiting. This frozen lake has hosted world championships, and offers fantastic conditions with wind nearly every day. The lake is six kilometres long and has its own snowkite school.
At Pillerseetal, you can snowkite in a deep valley, on another stunning frozen lake. This is the nearest spot to Kitzbuhel, and is a popular ski area in its own right, with good facilities for both Alpine and cross-country skiing.
Yet another frozen lake snowkiting spot can be found at Achensee. This 9 km long lake is a popular spot, with numerous snowkiting courses on offer at its school. The Achensee is the Tyrol’s highest lake, offering spectacular views over the surrounding countryside.
Wherever you go in the Kitzbuhel area and the rest of the Tyrol, you’ll find frozen lakes and wide open spaces which could make potential snowkiting spots. With a spirit of adventure and your own kite, you’ll always be able to find a spot to get a kite up in the air. And if you need snowkiting lessons, Tyrol has several good snowkiting schools. Take a Kitzbuhel snowkiting trip and see for yourself!
