A small town and municipality situated near the south west coast of Portugal in the Algarve, Aljezur surfing holidays have become popular thanks to its Atlantic coast conditions. Although the town itself is not directly on the coast, it’s a great staging spot for some serious surfing, with big waves and quieter waters away from the main Algarve resorts.
Due to the big swells, currents and undertows, things can get a little rough here. The beaches are usually recommended for more experienced surfers, although on calmer days and in the more sheltered spots intermediate and beginner surfers can enjoy the waves too. Praia do Amado is a favourite with surfers and home to a number of surf championships. With some nice pipe waves and a few simple amenities, this is a great place for some serious surfing.
Praia da Bordeira is a huge, exposed beach that has some great conditions and is also popular with kitesurfers. Another surfer’s favourite is the Praia do Castelejo, perhaps not the most accessible but offering some good breaks and deserted waters, especially during the week. Praia de Monte Clérigo is another, more accessible beach that’s worth checking out on Aljezur surfing holidays.
Tourism hasn’t quite hit this part of Portugal yet, and while the facilities and amenities of the Algarve are just a few miles and a short drive away, the really big crowds seldom make it out here. At weekends the beaches might be busy but in the winter season and during the week it will be almost deserted.
With a number of surf schools in the area and some smaller breaks suitable for teaching, alongside the bigger waves for more advanced surfers, Aljezur surfing holidays are ideal for anyone looking for a surf getaway in Portugal.
