Guide to Nassau windsurfing holidays

Nov 02, 2013 BY auto

The city of Nassau is a busy Caribbean port, a popular holiday destination and the capital of the Bahamas. It lies on New Providence Island, home to the majority of the Bahamas’ population and its biggest draw for visitors. Nassau is famous for its paradise beaches, complete with sand, sun and coconuts. But not everyone goes to Nassau to lie on the beach…as tempting as that might be. There is lots of fun to be had in the water too: here is our Nassau windsurfing guide.

Nassau is at its best for windsurfers during the winter months from November to April, when winds are usually between 15 and 25 knots. Those strong winds do bring the potential for hurricanes, but they’re easily avoided and rare. During the summer, winds tend to hover around 10-15 knots.

Many of Nassau’s hotels will be able to rent out gear and arrange lessons for windsurfers. Most of the windsurfing in Nassau is flat-water, though there is some potential for wave sailors.

Cable Bay is one of the busiest tourist beaches, with mostly flat water off the beach and a bit of swell further out. It’s close to many of the big hotels – and the nightlife! Nearby Goodman’s Bay is a good all-round choice too. You’ll find more waves toward the west of the island, around Lyford Cay and Love Beach.

For flat water, head south. South Beach is a good choice, with a nice shallow lagoon that is great for beginners.

Take a Nassau windsurfing trip and discover the island beyond the brochures. There is plenty of sunbathing and partying to be had in Nassau, but it is a great windsurfing destination too.
