Two-day intermediate navigation courses in the French Alps. The NNAS Silver intermediate course improves skills and confidence beyond the paths
Improve your navigation over two days in the spectacular surroundings of the French Alps, and gain an NNAS accredited Silver Navigator Award.
Building on the content of the Bronze course, we will introduce more advanced map and compass skills in simple steps. At each stage, the aim is to demystify the process of map reading.
The course covers contour interpretation, advanced compass techniques, using the map in poor visibility and navigating away from marked paths. On the theory side, we will cover route-planning, timings, safety in the mountains and relevant legislation.
At the end of the course, you will be confident using a range of maps in moderately complex terrain. You will have the ability to navigate safely both on and off marked footpaths.
This course currently runs in Les Deux Alpes and Chamonix.
Meet the rest of the group for an introduction and ice-breaker exercise over coffee. We then head out for a short walk close to the resort to start your two-day intermediate navigation course in the stunning French Alps. First w we introduce some more advanced navigation techniques and then after a lunch break we head into the hills for some map, compass and contour exercises. An evening session covering essential theory provides an opportunity to socialise with the group over a drink.
We will spend the morning in a longer walk, venturing into the mountains. Over a series of navigation legs, you will learn and practice new skills. The afternoon is assessment time, with a chance to test your new knowledge over a circular walk with the group.
